De uns tempos pra cá fiquei fascinado pela música angolana. Nesse caminho, a obra de Bonga Kwenda foi um precioso encontro. No ano de 1972, o compositor gravou seu primeiro disco "Angola 72" pelo selo Morabeza Records, em seu exílio na Holanda. "Mona Ki Ngi Xica" foi gravada aí. Na época, o país africano atravessava o período de luta pela independência, o que só viria em 1975. Ao longe, seus filhos desterrados cantavam coisas da terra.
As histórias de nossas canções companheiras atravessam também a nossa história. O som é transporte e é usina, carrega as forças que transformam o nosso viver, já diria o mestre Tincoã, seu Mateus Aleluia. É de rara beleza a capacidade de verter dores e alegrias em sopro, canto e canção. Penso que isso é algo que está presente de uma maneira forte na música angolana. Um jeito que parece povoar também o nosso samba, parente do semba, dos lados de lá do Atlântico.
Gravei "Mona ki ngi xica", em 2018, num inverno, em Minas Gerais. A canção fala sobre a despedida de um pai nos seus últimos momentos de vida com seu filho. Uma despedida que nos lembra "kalunga" que é morte, mas é também o desconhecido, a passagem do pai e o filho que torna a transformar-se, a vida que perdura. Deixo essa interpretação como uma declaração de amor à música de Angola.

For some time now I have been fascinated by Angolan music. Along this path, Bonga Kwenda's work was a precious encounter. In 1972, the composer recorded his first album "Angola 72" on the Morabeza Records label, in exile in the Netherlands. "Mona Ki Ngi Xica" was recorded there. At the time, the African country was going through the period of struggle for independence, which would only come in 1975. In the distance, its exiled sons sang things from the land.
The stories of our companion songs also cross our history. Sound is transport and it is a station, it carries the forces that transform our life, as Mestre Tincoã, Mr. Mateus Aleluia, would already say. The ability to transform pains and joys in breath and song is of rare beauty. I think that this is something that is strongly present in Angolan music. A way that seems to also populate our samba, a relative of semba, on the other side of the Atlantic.
I recorded "Mona ki ngi xica", in 2018, in a winter, in Minas Gerais. The song talks about the departure of a father in his last moments of life with his son. A farewell that reminds us of "kalunga" that is death, but it is also the unknown, the passage of the father and the son that changes again, the life that endures. I leave this interpretation as a declaration of love for Angola's music.
